Crepuscular is a painting informed by a collaborative effort between public artist Bronte Naylor & Meanjin-based contemporary mover Cassandra Kowitz. The pair investigated the process of loss and the difficult re-adjustment & shape of healing.
This concept has been distilled across an un-described time-period; a discourse shaped by personal encounters and an investigation into collective healing, ceremony, and ritual across cultures. The pair have communicated through exchanged conversations, images, prose, and photographs capturing the movement of the human body through self-portraiture and explorative poses with multiple bodies, objects & architecture.
Movements in the staging process explore a domestic setting, obscuring gravity and investigating a positionless state of grief. The figures both hold and fall… a continuous stream of lines contoured by the figures, stitched together, rolling in quick succession.
The piece also speaks to a soft blurring of intimacy, and echoes of disorientation. The process of grieving within the body is somewhat muted, reserved for a private internal reconciliation. Here, the figures lean or rest on one another for support, folding towards themselves, rather than surpassing.
Crepuscular uses the context of public art to openly present mutual consolation in a communal, shared space.
