Topshelf

A large collage of symbols and references painted on the façade of Topshelf Instruments, painted with fond memories and homage to the local music scene of Hobart. In the artist's view, the work is a snapshot of 30 years as the store opened at this location.

Some of the references found in the artwork identified by the artist are as follows:

• XO - Born and raised in Hobart as well as their son, now Melbourne based and making waves
• Psycroptic - Possibly Tasmania's most notorious musical export
• Beakers - A reference to the Beaker Street Science Festival (with heaps of music) and Scientists of Modern Music
• ZZ (Zoe Zac) - A mainstay of Hobart music over the years and a frontperson of many bands
• Jamin - The artist's signature and a reference, who released an album under this name in 2003 and performed it at the Cygnet Folk Festival in the same year
• The Stitch and Fflora - Both genuine level improvs
• 50 Million Clowns - One of the artist's favourite bands of the '90s, famously supported Fugazi at the Sapphire Ballroom, a gig to remember
• Rob the Bloke - Hobart-based modular synth artist
• Several venues, including The Wheatsheaf, The Brisbane, Goulburn Arms, The Trout, and Round Midnight (alongside the band Wild Pumpkins at Midnight)
• The Native Cats - One of Hobart's most beloved bands with Julian Teakle playing a pivotal role in Hobart's music scene
• The Map - A radio show presented by Aeron Clark showcasing all Tasmanian recordings on...
• Edge Radio - A huge supporter of Tasmanian music
• The Stickmen - Synonymous with the musical zeitgeist of local music in Hobart in the '90s
• Fridge - Another seminal '90s punk bank hailing from Launceston
• Suffragette Records - Local record store with broad reach and an all female catalogue. The star was first used as a symbol by the movement in America in 1919
• Aeroplane Records - Founded by the late great Lin Stanton and now championed by his family friends the Brown siblings
• Little Ugly Girls - One of the artist's favourite Hobart bands in the '90s, first seen at Claremont College in 1994 and still going 30 years on
• Little Bird/Chicken Hawk Down, from the late '90s and mid-2000s
• Chupacabra - Translates to sucking goat - one of the best Hobart supergroups of the mid to late 2010s. This also is a double reference to Evil Goat.
