The title of the artwork is based from a German word, which roughly translates to environment, or the world experienced by an organism. It consists of two murals painted on two surfaces, featuring the artist's daughter Mia, peering into a portal and again represented looking through from beyond. An Eastern Quoll also accompanies her, looking curiously back outside. The artwork takes further inspiration from the artist's PhD thesis, in which umwelt is examined through an artistic and philosophical framework.
There are several elements which highly the importance of knowledge, symbolism, and heritage. These include a pair of Forty Spotted Paralotes, a collection of timber drawers manufactured by J Walch & Sons, several titles on the bookshelf with their own connection to place or history, and a colourful view of the Derwent River and surrounding valleys from Mount Wellington.
