The mural conveys aspects of our local environment and for the current urban space to be recreated as an Educational Sensory Garden for our local community that is in creative harmony with the human. It sensitively displays the deep spiritual involvement of this connection, which can be lost in a distinctly humanistic society.
The theme of the mural celebrates our local ecosystem and our connection to it.
This mural features a portrait of local Wiradjuri woman and Indigenous Rights Activist Dhani Gilbert, laying sleeping along the length of the wall. From her body grows Happy Wanderer, Yam Daisy, Silver Banksia, Bluebells, Salt Bush and Native Raspberry.
The roots from the plants burrow into her figure, bringing to mind themes of rebirth, metamorphosis, and decay. A red belly baclk snake curls up her hip, nearby, a black cockatoo is framed by silver banksias. The background, disguised and diffused by paint, is a silhouette of Mt Painter and rolling Canberran hills.
This artwork, displaying native bush tucker and local wildlife, is situated deeply in local place and community. With the extensive consultation we embarked on, the community was passionate about having First Nations representation. In such a politically named suburb, this mural reminds us to reflect, acknowledge, and celebrate First Nations communities as we progress towards a sustainable and just future.
