This artwork on Level 3 of Westfield Hurstville serves as a celebration of the multicultural community coming together as one and as a tribute to the spirit and heritage of NAIDOC Week.
The artist's use of traditional colours, intricate patterns and symbolic imagery represents the Georges River flowing through to Westfield Hurstville as the meeting place of our community.
Looking right to left, the tortoise, eels and potty mullet represent the Georges River on Bidjigal Land, which runs to where it meets the ocean. The inner circle is Westfield Hurstville and it's community. The sting ray is from Botany Bay, the whale (burriburri) represents La Perouse and is the totem of the Dharawal people.
The footprints symbolise the time of hunting and gathering on the land, while the handprints represent the multicultural community coming together as one.
The boomerangs and spears are representative of hunting on land and water, by the Bidjigal people.
