Planned as part of the second anniversary of the February 2022 floods, the Back Gallery team organised this 49-metre mural in collaboration with Summerland Bank and Dr Bridie Cullinane of the Green Innovation Awards. The artwork had input through community consultation, workshops and several submissions from local students. The artwork's intent is for celebration, rather than a memorial.
It's a celebration of our community and the efforts that were made in terms of supporting and rescuing each other. I've shoulder-tapped a few individuals who are involved in the rescue, because I felt comfortable enough to do so, to see if they would be forthcoming with their shared experiences. The majority don't want to be in the limelight or seen as heroes. They just did what they did and would like to think that anyone would do what they did in the same position.
The artwork honours those who acted selflessly and bravely, which consists of flood and rescue scenes, some whimsy elements such as a surfing cow, and many elements found across Lismore. There are several blank paper boats which allows anyone to add their own message directly to the wall. The artwork is featured along the Metropole Hotel wall along Larkin Lane, and was launched on 3 August 2024.
